20 20 The Year in Audiobooks 2014 BEST VOICES Julia Whelan has skillfully and sensitively narrated some of the year's best young adult audiobooks, including Jandy Nelson's I'll Give You the Sun and Laurie Halse Anderson's The Impossible Knife of Memory. In Dana Reinhardt's We Are the Goldens, Whelan delivers a first-person narrative that is voiced as a plea from Nell to her older sister. Nell's characteri- zation demands a nuanced reading, and Whelan's layered portrayal is perfect. She delivers teen vulnerability and attitude in equal measure, always allowing them to be real, diverse, and three-dimensional characters rather than teenaged caricatures. We applaud and appreciate her authentic performances and her emotive readings, which help connect listeners to these fraught, often emotionally intense YA stories.
