20 20 The Year in Audiobooks 2014 Young Adult In a work this personal and import- ant, it's vital to utilize a narrator who engages the listener and renders an authentic interpretation of the writer, both physically and emotionally. Neela Vaswani does this admirably. She sounds like Westerners would imagine Malala Yousafzai, now slightly older than when we first heard of her, would sound. Vaswani's Indian accent is far from overpowering, and her diction is crisp and easy on the ear. Her cadence also adds to the realism of the reading. While the book is aimed at young adults, adult listeners should find equal pleasure in it. In We Were Liars, narrator Ariadne Meyers's tone is candid as 17-year-old Cadence Sinclair Eastman reveals ugly realities about her proud, wealthy family. She harshly judges them from a secure position as one of "the Liars"—the younger generation of teens who spend summers on an exclusive island. Soon Meyers reveals the opposing views of a teen named Cady. She suffers crippling headaches and is BEST AUDIOBOOKS gripped by a tragedy that lurks at the edges of her unstable mind. Meyers's expression of Cadence's pain is raw and startling, as is the Liars' tragic response to her unlocking of secrets.
