BEST VOICES Biography & History GROVER GARDNER The Last of the Doughboys by Richard Rubin (Blackstone Audiobooks) EDWARD HERRMANN The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown (Penguin Audio/ Recorded Books) The Bully Pulpit by Doris Kearns Goodwin (Simon & Schuster Audio/ Recorded Books) MALCOLM HILLGARTNER Kissinger by Walter Isaacson (Blackstone Audiobooks) PETER FRANCIS JAMES Devil in the Grove by Gilbert King (Harper Audio) WANDA MCCADDON Rose by Rosina Harrison (Tantor Media) "The technical challenges of performing long-form biography are such that pacing and tone are the major focus throughout," narrator Malcolm Hillgartner tells us. "It becomes my responsibility in the narration to do what I need to do so that the reader is engaged and stays that way." Hillgartner's diverse topics range from John F. Kennedy, Jr. (JFK's Last Hundred Days by Thurston Clarke) to an edge-of-your-seat Coast Guard rescue in 1952 (The Finest Hours by Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman). Walter Isaacson's biography of Henry Kissinger, published in 1992 but just released on audio this year, is enhanced by Hillgartner's outstanding narration. His delivery is lively, and he's a great storyteller—no half-bored professor intoning a history lecture here. 20 20 The Year in Audiobooks 2013
