Listening With . . .
Kent, United Kingdom
Adventurer and explorer
Felicity Aston became, in
2012, the first woman in the world
to ski across Antarctica alone.
She did, however, have voices in
her ear keeping her company.
"I was given a full set of recordings
of BBC Radio 4's This Sceptered Isle
series to download onto my MP3
player. That's over 300 hours of
British history. To some, that might
seem to be a form of punishment,
but I was thrilled. The Antarctic
landscape is incredible, but it is
very monotonous. I spent two
months skiing into a view
that didn't change much in all that
time. Having the history to listen
to transported me to a different
place and kept my mind busy."
Aston says she doesn't have as
"I love history, and skiing 10
to 12 hours a day gave
me plenty of time to listen.

much time for listening when she's
at home, but a new adventure
is just around the corner. "My next
expedition will be another big
ski journey in Antarctica," she says,
"and I will definitely take audio
material again."—Jennifer M. Dowell
