This Best of the Year issue is full of great listening opportunities— more than a year's worth of audiobooks, if you were to work your way through all of them! Of course, we expect you will browse, find something of interest, check our published review at audiofilemagaine. com, listen to the sample audio—and then decide what to queue up for your next audiobook. Selecting a title much like you would do might not seem unusual, but for me it is. Usually, I'm listening to audiobooks that have not been reviewed yet. Our whole team of reviewers is listening ahead of our pub- lication dates, and often before the audiobook has even been released. But now, with our new AudioFile podcast, Behind the Mic, I get to listen from a different point of view. Every week, Jenn Dowell, Emily Connelly, and I sit down to select the audiobooks we'll feature in upcom- ing daily episodes of Behind the Mic. We start with our completed published reviews. Which titles have received AudioFile Earphones Awards? What is each audiobook's unique appeal, based on the review? Which titles are getting book buzz? Recently I chose The White Darkness by David Grann, narrated by Will Patton. Three things about it caught my attention: The audiobook received an Earphones Award from reviewer Anna Broome; the author's previous book, Killers of the Flower Moon, has been a staple on bestseller lists; and Will Patton, who rarely records nonfiction, was hooked on his subject, the polar expeditions of Henry Worsley. So I started listening and was entranced. When I looked into the book's backstory, I found Grann's New Yorker article with photographs— both archival and recent—that amplified the passion that drove Worsley to the freezing landscapes of Antarctica. As a result, our Behind the Mic episode on The White Darkness has been one of my favorite conversations so far.
