STILL LIVES Maria Hummel Read by Tavia Gilbert Narrator Tavia Gilbert masterfully lures lis- teners into the flashy, sinister Los Angeles art world and keeps them on the edge of their seats throughout Hummel's provoc- ative thriller. Gilbert uses her carefully articulated, sometimes breathless voice to tell the story of Maggie, a young museum publicity writer who is sud- denly thrust into the search for artist Kim Lord, who has gone missing on the night of her big opening. Shady characters abound as Maggie tries to unravel the artist's last known move- ments and begins to fear that Kim's gruesome sub- ject matter (photographic reenactments of the murder scenes of notorious female victims) may be a clue to her fate. Gilbert's nimble narration will keep the listener guessing to the end. D.G.P. HighBridge Audio 9.5 hrs. Dunne effec- tively conveys the fear Meg experiences when she sees a light in a church crypt and finds a murdered man there and five cremation niches broken open. Soon the listener catches the contagious enthusiasm of Meg's father as he investi- gates a thirty-year-old robbery/homicide case that is connected to all the broken units. Dunne uses believable voices that convey the nature of the quirky charac- ters Andrews has created—for example, Meg's micromanaging mother and the efficient but gruff police chief. The energy and joy Dunne brings to this audiobook make it a special listen. V.M.G. Dreamscape 9.25 hrs. Unabridged Trade Ed.: CD ISBN 9781974903931 $59.99 (also MP3, DD) LYING IN WAIT Liz Nugent Read by Caoilfhionn Dunne, David McFetridge, Lesley McGuire Three narrators work expertly together in creating a sensational performance of Nugent's thriller. What if your dad had a lapse of judgment that involved murder and your mom showed up to finish off the victim? Would you be able to figure it out and turn them in to the police? That's the premise of this slowly mounting suspense story about a family's terrible secret. Caoilfhionn Dunne, David McFetridge, and Lesley McGuire fluidly pass the chapters between them. The result is an immer- sive listening experience that will have you looking for any excuse to slip on your headphones. Whether you're hearing the petulance of Laurence, the teenager, or the arch confidence of Lydia, the ideal wife, these are characters you'll remem- ber long after the last chapter. M.R. She must be fiercely disciplined, yet unfailingly gen- tle and empathetic with others in order for the listener to understand why so many people love her. Beth Chalmers is impeccable. Whether you've been with this series from the beginning or are tuning in here for the climax, you will understand Frieda through Chalmers's marvelous rendition. Also, French makes it easy to infer what has gone before in Frieda's story, and you'll be on tenterhooks as you wait to learn if the mistakes of others will finally kill her. Chalmers can apparently do anything in the way of accents and characters, but her Frieda is a chef d'oeuvre. Brava. B.G. Harper Audio 10.25 hrs.
